Welcome to Year 4 2017-2018

Well done to Year 5 who represented the school in a hockey tournament, last week. All children were a credit to the school and performed extremely well. One of our teams came second place and were awarded silver medals!

What a busy day in Year 4! This morning we looked at the Chinese architecture and design in Stowell Street in the pouring rain. Then we shopped in the Chinese supermarket before returning to school. A huge “thank you” to Ms Taylor, Ms Matheson and Mrs O’Brien for helping us along with Mrs Sinclair and Mrs Donaldson. This afternoon we had a delicious Chinese food tasting session, with huge thanks to Mrs Cai for providing it for us. Don’t be surprised if the children don’t want any tea!

STEM week we took part in the Leaders Award Programme for 2017. We had to think of a problem and then design a solution. We talked about how we could solve these problems then came up with our designs. Watch out for the designs in shops soon.

We have also been investigating light and shadows as part of our Science week with Green shift education. Here were are blocking the light source and creating our own shadows.

In maths we are learning to add up using more formal methods here you can see us using concrete apparatus to add pairs of three digit numbers. Using the base 10 helps us to visualise the numbers and helps us to get the right answer.

As part of our Science week we were set a number of challenges by Miss Todd.

Which group could build a structure that could hold the most weight, who could build the tallest structure and who could build the tallest structure with the least amount of pegs. All activities were really fun and we learnt how to work as a team.

We have been learning about the Chalice and the Ciborium that are used to carry the bread and wine to the altar during Mass. Father Robert told us all about the Eucharistic Prayer as well.

We have been learning about multiplication using the grid method and arrays and division by grouping.

We have also been learning how to present in our computing lessons. We went to the The Word where Mrs Hayward helped us to make our Great Rain forest television show using the green screen. We were in a real television studio.

We had a great day at the Winter Gardens in Sunderland learning about the rainforest and how plants grow.

In Year 3 we have been learning to tell the time to the nearest minute W/C 30-01-17.

We have also been learning how to measure using tape measures and subtract using the measurements we collected. Don’t tell Mrs Butt we have been drawing on the hall floor.
